Derrick Freeman, Instructor, Video Streaming and Compression Consultant
Derrick Freeman earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He started his career at WHIO TV as an Editor and Technical Director for the cable news operation. Derrick has 11 years of experience in video production, 10 years of videography experience and 8 years of experience as a non-linear editor. He has been compressing video for 13 years and has spent the last 14 years researching streaming media. Derrick was an instructor in the Design Department at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio for 5 years. He taught Computer Basics for Mac, Digital Video, Photoshop and Interactive Digital Theory.
Derrick managed the website for the City of Dayton Television Network’s Video Streaming Channels for 4 years. Their streaming channels were featured in Sorenson Media’s on-line video showcase for several years. In addition to Derrick’s consulting and training work at Freeman Compression Inc., he has managed the Streaming and Compression Training Division for GeniusDV for 5 years. Outside of his teaching and consulting duties Derrick has been a speaker for the WEVA Expo and NAB Show teaching on video streaming and compression. He has also written several articles for “Studio Monthly” magazine, GeniusDV.com and the Freeman Compression Blog. During his career, Derrick taught a Six City U.S. Tour on Telestream’s Live Streaming Tool Wirecast and Video Compression Tool Episode Encoder Pro.
He works with video compression and streaming tools such as: Episode Encoder, Sorenson Squeeze, Flip4Mac, Wirecast, QuickTime Pro, Dreamweaver, QuickTime Streaming Server, Wowza Media Server, JW Player, Windows Media Streaming Server, MPEG Streamclip, and Sawmill Professional. Derrick is a Certified Sawmill Trainer and has also been a beta tester for Sorenson Media and Telestream Flip4Mac compression tools.
Derrick has provided video streaming and compression training to the following colleges and universities: Valencia Community College, Wichita State University, Ohio State University, William Woods University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, University of Vermont, St. Philip’s College, Sinclair Community College, Queens Mary College in the United Kingdom, Georgia College & State University, Wright State University, Emory University, Seattle Community Colleges, Central Virginia Community College, University of Central Florida, Georgia Tech, Trident Technical College, El Paso Community College, Northwestern California University School of Law, Harvard Medical School, and UCLA.
Derrick currently serves as an Instructor and Video Streaming and Compression Consultant for Freeman Compression Inc. In addition to providing video streaming and compression training to a host of colleges and universities over the years, he has provided training and consulting to many companies, individuals, and organizations through Freeman Compression Inc. He specializes in providing video streaming, compression training and consulting to clients On-line, On-site and In-class in Orlando. Derrick’s teaching style allows him to quickly get novices, intermediate, and advanced users up to speed with Wirecast, Live Streaming, Flash Media Live Encoder, JW Player, Wowza Media Server, Sorenson Squeeze, Episode Encoder Pro and many other applications. In addition to Derrick’s work in Video Streaming and Compression, he was a member of the Visual Communications’ Advisory Committee at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. He also served as a member of the Digital Design Advisory Committee for Miami Valley Career Technology Center in Clayton, Ohio and was part of the Ohio Valley Chapter of Media Communications Assoc.
