Highwinds, a leader in content delivery, network and IP services, announced that it has acquired Internet infrastructure service provider BandCon, based in Costa Mesa, Calif. The BandCon Content Delivery System is a natural fit with Highwinds’ multiplatform IP service offerings, including its content delivery network (CDN). The acquisition validates Highwinds’ success as a profitable and rapidly growing global provider of content delivery and network services.

“We are pleased to be able to leverage our balance sheet strength and financial success to make an acquisition of this magnitude,” said Steve Miller, chairman and CEO of Highwinds. “Over the past decade, BandCon has earned a great deal of industry respect. I continue to be impressed by the BandCon team, their experience and their dedication to customer service.”

The BandCon Content Delivery System is a set of Internet infrastructure and delivery products which complements Highwinds’ content delivery, network and IP services portfolio. As a result of this acquisition, BandCon and Highwinds customers now have access to an international network with 2 terabits per second of edge capacity and more than 70 POPs (points of presence) worldwide. The combined company now offers a full range of services including:

▪    Content Delivery Services
▪    Hosted IP Services and Software
▪    IP Transit and Transport Services
▪    Content Storage and Protection Services
▪    Colocation and Peering Solutions

“The acquisition of BandCon is highly accretive and significantly boosts the scale of Highwinds’ content delivery, network and IP services business,” said Steve Liddell, recently appointed president of Highwinds Content Delivery and Network Services.

Both companies are privately held and thus the terms of the deal will not be disclosed. BandCon founder and CEO Ari Benowitz will stay on as chief revenue officer of Highwinds and report to Steve Liddell.

Internap Provides High-Performance Content Delivery Network for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival

Internap Network Services Corporation, a global provider of end-to-end Internet business solutions, announced that it is an Official Provider of Content Delivery Network (CDN) services for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. Sundance Institute is using Internap’s CDN – both during the Festival and on an ongoing basis – to simplify and streamline the creation, delivery and management of interactive web content that promotes the event itself and the work of independent filmmakers year-round, with guaranteed optimal quality and performance.

New forms of web content, such as podcasts, slideshows and streaming video, have become critical to the independent film community, allowing filmmakers to market and distribute their films to audiences worldwide at minimal cost. In 2009, visitors to the Sundance Film Festival website downloaded nearly three million videos; and in the months surrounding the annual Sundance Film Festival, website traffic typically surges dramatically, averaging between 50,000 – 150,000 unique visitors daily.

However, as online video gains in popularity, the performance of the network is also becoming a top priority, with viewers showing little tolerance for slow-loading video. A recent study by analytics firm TubeMogul found that 81.2% of web video viewers click away when videos are slow to load and that “rebuffering” occurs in nearly one out of every 25 streams. Internap’s CDN uniquely addresses this issue, ensuring an optimized video viewing experience through its patented Managed Internet Route Optimizer™ (MIRO) technology, which selects the best path for video traffic in real time, based on network performance characteristics instead of the least number of Internet hops.

“Our collaboration with Internap has grown to such an extent that we could not provide high-quality online content without them,” said Joseph Beyer, associate director at Sundance Institute Online. “Internap’s CDN allows us to easily create and share streaming video and other new types of content – an increasingly vital part of building awareness of our artists and bringing their work to a global audience – while ensuring a consistently reliable viewing experience, even during the dramatic spike in web traffic that occurs during the Sundance Film Festival.”

Internap’s CDN provides a complete solution for live and on-demand video streaming with “set and forget” capabilities that allow organizations to focus exclusively on content creation by simplifying and streamlining the workflow for content uploading, transcoding, management and reporting. Integration with the Adobe Flash Platform, Microsoft Silverligh and iPhone formats, Internap allows customers to maximize the consuming audience by addressing the broadest range of devices across the Internet.

Telestream announced that Cadence Inc., a premier live event marketing and communications firm, chose Telestream Wirecast webcasting software to broadcast Ford’s keynote address speech live from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES®) January 7 in Las Vegas. Cadence selected Wirecast because of its ability to encode live streams in real time to multiple streaming formats – Windows Media, QuickTime and Flash – and for its ability to immediately archive the video for new releases and online viewing by global audiences. The keynote address video is available for viewing on The Ford Story website at http://fordlivemedia.cadence-inc.com/.

“We evaluated several products but selected Telestream Wirecast for its reliable, multiformat live streaming, ease of use, and excellent support,” said Steve Auer, President of Cadence, Inc. “Everything worked flawlessly. Real time statistics of the Wirecast stream, such as bit rate and audio levels, made it easy for us to monitor the feeds and provided our operations center with critical information during the live cast.”

CES is the world’s largest consumer technology trade show, where the makers of the latest electronic products show off their wares. CES invited Ford President and CEO, Alan Mulally to deliver the opening keynote address because he has positioned Ford as a leading innovator in the automotive industry.

Ford chose Cadence because of the company’s ability to provide a total, integrated live video event package. In addition to live video production, streaming to a content delivery network and archiving of the video for later online viewing, Cadence provides preshow promotions, tracking, analytics and reporting of the live webcast itself. Cadence has a strong foundation in production, audio-visual staging and logistics. In addition to Ford, Cadence clients include such well-known Fortune 100 companies as Pepsico, Kraft, Toyota, Xerox, and PhilipMorrisUSA, to name a few.

“We’re honored that Cadence, a leading provider of live event services, selected Wirecast for this prestigious event,” said Barbara DeHart, VP of Marketing at Telestream. “Wirecast provides an innovative and affordable solution for high-quality video streaming of all types of live events.”

Wirecast is live video production software for Mac and Windows computers that is available for a fraction of the cost of broadcast hardware equipment. Developed specifically for live and on-demand webcasts (broadcasts for the web), Wirecast works just like a video switcher, controlling real-time switching between multiple cameras while mixing in other media such as pre-recorded video, audio, graphics and slides. With features such as chroma key, transitions, 3D graphics, and built-in titles, Wirecast offers high production value for the creation of professional webcasts.
