Telestream, the leading provider of digital media tools and workflow solutions,  announced the execution of a definitive agreement to acquire the business operations of the Anystream division of Grab Networks. The combination will further extend Telestream’s position in the software video transcoding market and significantly enhance the company’s ability to provide enterprise-class, file-based and live encoding solutions across the globe.

Founded ten years ago, Anystream pioneered a solution for media companies looking to produce and transcode video to publish on the web with the introduction of their Agility products. The company grew to become a leading provider of automated multi-platform media publishing solutions, and its solutions are used by over 600 of the leading media companies in 38 countries around the world.

Once completed, the transaction will add a world-class engineering and support team, an East Coast office, and a key account sales team to Telestream’s worldwide business. The addition of Anystream’s seasoned team of professionals grows a dedicated, world-class group focused on automated multi-platform media publishing solutions within the Telestream family.

“This is a great opportunity for Telestream to accelerate its momentum helping media and entertainment companies unleash the promise of their media assets through next-generation enterprise-class solutions designed for complex multi-format workflows. Anystream’s customer base will benefit not only from Telestream’s broad end-to-end digital media tools and workflow solutions, but also from its strategic focus on transcoding,” said Dan Castles, CEO of Telestream. “This transaction is very synergistic and truly a win-win for customers, employees, and partners alike.”

“This transaction further helps the company leverage a growing market,” remarked Michelle Abraham, principal analyst with In-Stat. In-Stat expects the worldwide multiformat transcoding market to grow from $117 million to $297 million in 2014, according to the report “Worldwide Market for Enterprise-Class Multiformat Transcoders” issued August 3, 2010. The transaction is subject to various closing conditions, and the terms of the deal were not disclosed as both companies are closely-held private entities.

Telestream Joins Major Industry Leaders to Offer Video Transcoding Support for WebM

Telestream, a leading provider of digital media tools and workflow solutions, announced broad support for the WebM project along with Google and other industry leaders. The new WebM open web media format, based on the VP8 open source video codec, will be available at no additional charge in all Telestream video encoding, transcoding and workflow products, including FlipFactory, Episode and recently announced Vantage.

“A key factor in the web’s success is that its core technologies are open and freely implementable. Video is fundamental to the web experience, and developers and content publishers need an open video format option,” said Mike Jazayeri, Group Product Manager at Google. “We are excited Telestream is joining a broad coalition of industry leaders supporting the WebM project to bring a new era of open innovation in web video.”

WebM is a flexible format that provides high-quality video across resolutions and bitrates to support a variety of viewing devices. Computational efficiency enables smooth video playback on low-power devices such as netbooks and mobile phones. WebM is optimized for the web and network video delivery, providing fast video starting and seeking within videos. VP8 is based on 10+ years of innovation in video compression by On2 Technologies. Its predecessors have been installed over two billion times, making it proven technology. Google gained access to the VP8 video codec when it acquired On2 Technologies earlier this year.

“Telestream has extensive experience optimizing and deploying On2 technologies and is uniquely positioned to bring the new WebM format to the video consumer, enterprise, media and entertainment markets,” said Barbara DeHart, VP of Marketing at Telestream. “We are excited to join Mozilla, Opera, Google, YouTube, and other software and hardware manufacturers in the WebM project.”

Telestream provides the broadest and deepest video and audio transcoding format support on the market today for desktop to server, Mac and Windows systems. Telestream video compression products support more than 120 digital media formats and wrappers, including WMV9, H.264, VC-1, Flash 8, VP6, MPEG-2, and 3GPP. In addition, Telestream video transcoding and workflow products support direct integration with leading third-party systems, allowing users to create and distribute content to virtually any platform or viewing device.

Telestream Named Industry Leader in Global Video Market

Telestream, a provider of world-class video transcoding solutions, affirms its leadership position with the announcement that Frost & Sullivan has presented the company with two 2009 Global Video Transcoders Market Leadership Awards. The Competitive Strategy Leadership Award recognizes Telestream for its accomplishments in the overall global enterprise, broadband and mobile video transcoders market. The World Market Share Leadership award recognizes Telestream’s position in the global broadband video transcoders market sector.

The awards cite Telestream’s best practices as being unmatched in their field; acknowledge the company’s continued double-digit growth rate and market share dominance; as well as the creativity and dedication of its executive team and employees.

Frost and Sullivan’s Competitive Strategy Leadership Award is based on key criteria that benchmarks Telestream against its competitors in the areas of competitive intelligence, competitive strategy, market share, brand positioning and customer satisfaction.

“Telestream has focused on using transcoding as an enabling technology and has been able to successfully merge it with other components to provide customers with complete workflow solutions. Further, Telestream has made two major acquisitions that have helped the company leverage growth,” said Vidya S. Nath, Senior Industry Analyst at Frost and Sullivan. “Despite tough economic conditions and extremely competitive situations, Telestream has enjoyed substantial growth in 2009 and established itself as a leading transcoding vendor across multiple market segments.”

Frost and Sullivan cites several key performance drivers that contributed to the growth of Telestream:

  • A highly diversified line of transcoding products complimented by other software and workflow automation products have resulted in higher adoption rates and the ability to address a broader range of markets.
  • Strong brand recognition driven by its perceived innovation leadership in spite of the dominance of large broadcast equipment vendors.
  • Year-on-year revenue growth of 30% despite recessionary economic conditions in 2009.

Frost and Sullivan also recognized Telestream as one of only two vendors that has gained robust growth within the global broadband video transcoders market, while driving innovation. Although the market is highly fragmented, Telestream led its competitors with a 17.9 percent market share.

“An important factor that has contributed to Telestream’s growth is its highly diversified product line. The company offers both enterprise-scale and desktop encoding and transcoding solutions, enabling customers of all sizes to compress video for web distribution,” stated Nath, at Frost & Sullivan.  “Telestream’s market share, especially in the broadband video market segment, has grown tremendously because of these efforts.”

Both awards acknowledge Telestream’s recent acquisitions as contributing to its transcoding expertise and breadth of product offerings for Mac and Windows users. These acquisitions have helped Telestream to leverage its growth and expand distribution.

“Telestream is honored to receive these two awards from Frost & Sullivan, one of the world’s top research firms,” said Dan Castes, CEO of Telestream. “The most important recognition for us is customer satisfaction which is reflected in our sales growth and is the foundation for receiving these awards. We are dedicated to continuing our quest to create the technology and products that enable a broad range of digital media solutions across multiple platforms.”
