TokBox Upgrades to Wowza to Reduce Costs and Support Growth of Video Chat Conferencing Services

Wowza Media Systems, the media server company, announced that the popular web-based video chat and video messaging service, TokBox has deployed Wowza Media Server 2 infrastructure to power its free and premium video conferencing services that are used by thousands of people each day.

Wowza Media Server 2 supports TokBox services, including the new TokBox Broadcast video chat that allows for up to 200 audience members in a single video conference, as well as the standard TokBox service that gives people the ability to have a video chat session with up to 20 friends.

Because of Wowza’s flexible server-side APIs, TokBox was able to deploy its proprietary audio technology. The technology, still in private beta, is a first for any web-based video chat service. It suppresses echo, enabling users to enjoy superior audio quality without the need to wear headphones. Additionally, the upgrade from Adobe Flash Media Interactive Servers to the Wowza Media Server 2 gave TokBox higher levels of scalability and flexibility while helping to reduce operational costs during a time of expansion for the company.

“With Wowza, TokBox now has a media server infrastructure that we can rely on to confidently grow and build new services,” said Yang Cao, vice president of engineering, TokBox. “Not only was the transition to Wowza easy, we have already seen rock-solid performance improvements, which has led to an immediate reduction in our operating costs.”

Since being deployed, the Wowza Media Server helped the company meet and exceed a scalability and performance challenge when TokBox offered its TokBox Broadcast video chat service for free during the air travel disruption caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland. This service offer, which normally costs $12.99 – $18.99 per session, brought a significant influx of new users to TokBox.

“With the rise of demand for live telepresence, conferencing and chat, Wowza is being sought out to help companies differentiate their services and meet their growth objectives,” said David Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder, Wowza Media Systems. “Because of our focus on unifying video delivery, Wowza is working with companies like TokBox to ensure they have a flexible infrastructure that allows for the creation and delivery of unrivaled interactive experiences for their audiences.”

Wowza Media Server 2 is the first in the industry to offer a single software platform capable of simultaneously delivering video from a single encoded source to multiple clients and devices, including Adobe’s Flash player, Apple’s iPhone and iPad, Microsoft’s Silverlight and others. First to democratize media streaming, Wowza Media Server is recognized as the Streaming Media Readers’ Choice for Best Innovation of 2009.

Wowza Media Server Helps TANDBERG Extend Telepresence and Video Conferencing

Wowza Media Systems, the media server software company, announced that TANDBERG chose Wowza Media Server as its exclusive solution for Flash streaming through the TANDBERG Content Server (TCS). By integrating the controls for Wowza Media Server software into the TCS, TANDBERG can now enable Flash streaming of live and on-demand telepresence and video conference calls and multimedia presentations, providing additional value to customers who can now deliver content to anyone from any device.

According to recent industry reports, one of the few technologies thriving in the current economic environment is video conferencing, which is expected to grow 15 percent in the next five years as businesses continue to look at ways to reduce expenses like travel and drive efficiencies. Integrated, easy to configure, reliable solutions like the TANDBERG Content Server, in combination with Wowza Media Server, deliver even greater value for video investments that can be leveraged for increased knowledge sharing, training, and content development.

“Wowza Media Server offers a very strong platform for Flash streaming. We opted to embed it in the TANDBERG Content Server to allow customers to use our standards-based telepresence and video conferencing systems to capture and distribute content in the Flash format, both live and on demand,” said Håkon Dahle, TANDBERG Chief Technologist. “We are also very excited about Wowza’s upcoming multi-protocol, multi-client streaming to any device, which will present even greater value for our customers.”

Wowza Media Server, currently deployed by over 30,000 licensees globally, is a high-performance, extensible and fully interactive Flash media server for live and on-demand streaming, chat, and recording. The upcoming Wowza Media Server 2 Advanced extends this proven platform beyond Flash with multi-protocol streaming to the iPhone/iPod touch and other mobile devices, the Silverlight player, QuickTime, and IPTV set-top boxes.

The TANDBERG Content Server enables organizations to enhance communication and scale knowledge by streamlining the process of capturing content throughout an organization for live and on-demand access. And now, with the addition of Flash support, TANDBERG customers have the flexibility to post recorded content straight from a video call to any website with no need for decoding.

“If a company is serious about video, if they are using video to communicate, it is now possible to have a complete strategy that covers video connectivity to nearly any device,” said Dave Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder, Wowza Media Systems. “Together TANDBERG and Wowza have created a solution that not only simplifies the overall video delivery workflow, but future proofs the video distribution in the enterprise.”

NAB follow-up for Streaming and Compression Tools

Posted by Derrick on April 22, 2009 under Video Streaming and Compression | Be the First to Comment

Here’s a Follow-up for Streaming and Compression Tools at NAB 2009.  Most of the buzz this NAB was surrounding Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming and its implementation in various tools.  This looks to be very exciting and allows automatic adjustment to lower or higher datarate for live and on-demand streams. The quality of the streams is impacted by the bandwidth available.

Inlet Technologies has some tools that have implemented the Smooth Streaming for on-demand and live streaming.  They also have a tool that provides great post encoding video analysis and called Semaphore.  The tool has been out for a while but now it’s included in their Armada encoding product that provides large scale encoding.  By large scale encoding I’m talking about hundreds and thousands of files being encoding.  The tool can do checks at the end to make sure there were no technical issues like dropped frames, audio loss, etc.  There are far to many features to list in this blog post.  Make sure you visit the Inlet website.

Wowza Media Systems will have a new release of their server that supports Smooth Streaming and Silverlight. I can’t wait.  The next release will also allow live streaming to the iPhone.  Amazing!  Check out there website.  We’ll that’s enough for this post.  Time to catch a plane.
